Accelerated Reader
What is AR?
Students at Rio Vista participate in a school-wide reading program called Accelerated Reader. Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor each child's independent reading practice. Students read books at their own individual reading levels and take computer generated comprehension quizzes to check their understanding. The quiz results give the students and teachers the feedback they need in order to set reading goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
AR differentiates by reading levels using the ZPD (zone of proximal development) - the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration. After students' reading levels are determined, rather than being assigned books, students choose their own reading material. As a result of being able to choose books that are interesting to them, students become more motivated to read and have more fun doing so.

- Encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes a day.
